Limoncello or lemoncello is a traditional Italian lemon liqueur produced mainly in southern Italy, especially in the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento and Capri regions. Made from the lemon peels, it captures the essence of fresh lemons in a sweet but tart liqueur.

As such, this creamy yellow drink is known for its intense lemon flavor and aromatic properties, making it a popular choice for both sipping and mixing in cocktails. Among the best brunch cocktails, limoncello definitely gives us that sunny touch to start the day off on the right note.

The origins of limoncello are steeped in tradition and legend, and its history dates back at least to the early 20th century, although some claim it goes back further.

The most popular story attributes the birth of the delicious liqueur to the romantic island of Capri. Here, in the early 20th century, Mrs. Maria Antonia Farace was tending her own aromatic garden of lemon and orange trees in the small boarding house she managed.

Years later, Mrs. Maria’s son, following in his mother’s footsteps, opened a small artisanal production of lemon-based liqueur, for which he registered the trademark. Thus appeared the first limoncello in history. This version, however, is followed by others that attribute the birth of limoncello to Sorrento and Amalfi.

As we can see, like any good legend, the true origin of limoncello is hidden behind the myth. The important thing is that its special color, flavor and creamy texture crossed seas and generations. And so, with the modern addition of sparkling wine, the limoncello spritz has made its way into gourmet brunch cocktails menus around the world.

Thus, since Mission Market dedicates a very special section to the brunch menu, we made our own version of this favorite among the gourmet brunch cocktails. Thus was born our Roman Holiday cocktail, a mix between our signature lemoncello, lavender honey and sparkling wine.

So if you are looking for your signature cocktail at brunch, we have the one for you. We wouldn’t be the best restaurant in Atlanta if brunch were not properly invited to the table. Because for us, brunch is not just another item in your day or on our menu, it’s an event in itself.

The beauty of a limoncello spritz is its versatility, making it an excellent companion to various brunch dishes.

For a well-rounded Mediterranean diet inspired brunch, consider pairing your brunch cocktails with some Mediterranean hummus as an appetizer. The subtle hint of lemon juice in the creaminess of hummus complements the limoncello spritz beautifully.

In this manner, Avocado toast, a brunch favorite, also pairs wonderfully, since its creamy profile balances the cocktail’s citrusy zing.

On the other hand, seasonal fruit pancakes and chicken waffles offer a smooth contrast to all that citric note. With the sweetness of the pancakes and the crispness of the chicken waffles, you have the full brunch experience.
